About this item
The Negera is a pair of hand-shaped clay kettle drums of two different sizes, each stretched with a taut hide membrane to produce a resonant, rounded bass note. Traditionally played together with a pair of wooden beaters known as Bira, the two drums are struck in alternating rhythm to create the deep, rolling percussion heard during temple rituals, Bihu processions and community celebrations across Assam. Handmade by local artisans using age-old clay-shaping and hide-stretching techniques, this set brings home an authentic piece of Assam's ceremonial percussion tradition, ready to be played or displayed as a striking piece of folk craft.
