About this item
The Khol is the devotional heartbeat of Assam's Vaishnavite tradition, played in namghars and Sattras to accompany kirtan and Sattriya dance. Carved from a single length of Kothal (jackfruit) wood into a tapering barrel form, its two open ends are covered with laced goat-skin membranes tuned to slightly different pitches. Unlike the Dhol, the Khol is played entirely with bare hands, producing a warm, rounded tone that anchors devotional singing. Introduced from neighbouring Bengal and adapted through centuries of Assamese Vaishnavite practice, this handcrafted khol brings an authentic piece of the state's spiritual music heritage into your home.
