About this item
The Gogona is a beloved Assamese folk instrument, essentially a bamboo jaw harp carved into a thin, flat strip with a fine vibrating reed cut into its centre. Held against the mouth and plucked with the fingers, it produces a sharp, buzzing, vibrating twang whose pitch changes with the shape of the mouth cavity, adding a playful rhythmic texture to Bihu music alongside the Dhol and Pepa. Traditionally made in two forms — a slightly heavier version played by men and a finer one played by women — every Gogona is entirely hand-carved from a single strip of bamboo, making it a light, portable and authentic piece of Assamese musical craft.
