About this item
The Dotara is one of Assam's best-loved folk string instruments, its pear-shaped resonating body hand-carved from seasoned wood and traditionally finished with a stretched lizard-skin covering that gives the sound box its distinctive warm, bass-forward tone. Fitted with strings running along a long fretless neck, it is plucked or strummed to accompany Bihu songs, folk ballads and community singing across rural Assam. Every Dotara is shaped and assembled by hand using techniques passed down through generations of local artisans, making each piece a unique, playable piece of Assamese musical heritage suited for both performance and display.
